Hi everyone! Today I have the chance for a bit of a different review. Have you heard of influenster? It's a website where you sign up, review products, share your opinion, and sometimes get the opportunity for a VoxBox, full of free items for you to try out. Since I'm a graduate student, I got the opportunity to try out the College VoxBox!
My VoxBox contained the following items:
ImPress Press-On Manicure (Yay, a nail item!)
NYC New York Color Show Time Glitter Eye-liner Pencil
Necco Tropical Wafers
Pentel EnerGel-X Campaign
Energy Sheets
Reviews and opinions after the break!
ImPress Press-On Manicure
I was very happy to have a nail product to review. I've never tried press-on nails, so this is something new.
The nails come with adhesive on one side, so there's no nail-glue involved making these a very fast mani. The nails come in a cute little container shaped like a nail polish bottle. The 'brush' part of the bottle slides off and the bottle unsnaps to reveal all of the press on nails.
The package contains 20 press-on nails of different sizes (I only seem to have 19 at the moment, so I must have lost one). This gives you quite a few different choices to find the best fit for each of your nails. One problem that I encountered when I first went to size-up the nails was that my nails were much too long to use the press-on nails. My nails weren't all that long, so I could see that being a problem with these products. Perhaps they are aimed at girls with short nail beds.
The instructions say to prep your nails by filing them then wiping them down with the enclosed alcohol prep pad. Since I wasn't interested in these lasting for more than a day, I instead used a clear base coat on my nails to protect them from the adhesive. The nails applied easily since they already have adhesive on them. I simply removed the plastic backing and stuck them down carefully to my nails. They seemed to hold up quite well. Mine lasted for a full day, but I wasn't overly rough on my hands. When I was ready to remove them I simply used a bit of acetone to loosen the base coat and the popped off easily.
Here they are before I filed and shaped them:
and here they are after being shaped into more of a square (which I tend to wear more often than not).
Lastly I painted the press-on nails to see how they would look if I want to try a different color.
Press-on nails aren't something I'm likely to use on a regular basis, but these were very fun to try. They are easy to use and fit quite well with my nails short.
NYC New York Color Show Time Glitter Eye-liner Pencil
The eye-liner pencil is definitely something I will use. I was a bit skeptical about the glitter, but it's nothing obnoxious and would be fun for a night out with the girls. It's nice and black and, while it smudged a bit, it was fairly long lasting.
I don't have any pictures of this eyeliner on my eye. I'm no expert at makeup so I'll leave the fantastic swatches to the makeup bloggers.
Necco Tropical Wafers
Tropical Necco wafers come in the flavors coconut, passion fruit, strawberry, lime, banana, and mango. . These didn't make it into a second picture before they were opened and partially consumed. I was a bit skeptical of them at first (I should mention that I'm skeptical about all new products. I usually heavily research things when I'm going to buy them, which is why I rarely have a bad nail polish review on the blog. Skepticism doesn't have to do with these particular products.) The wafers smelled really good so I opened them out and picked out a pink (strawberry) and really enjoyed it. I tried the other flavors and the only one I didn't like was mango, since I don't like mangos. the flavors are very realistic, not your typical jolly-rancher style fake fruit flavors. My favorite was the strawberry followed by the passion fruit!
Pentel EnerGel-X Campaign
I take all of my notes in pen, yet I can't keep track of pens for the life of me so I was happy to see this pentel purple pentel pen in the box. I have probably 10 different bags that I use regularly and they've all got a few pens hidden in them somewhere. The pen writes smoothly in purple with a medium point line.
Energy Sheets
What a cool idea! Energy Sheets are an energy supplement in a small rectangular sheet that you dissolve on your tongue. I go through so much coffee that caffeine in a quick format is a promising idea. This is a really fun product, and each sheet (10 in the box) contains about as much caffeine as a half a cup of coffee. Unfortunately I don't like mint so I made my roommate (also a graduate student) try them out. She happily accepted the box and said they definitely work to keep her more alert in class. She thinks that they would be a great product to keep on hand in her purse or backpack for those days when she gets a headache from lack of caffeine.
Here's the ingredients, there's a B-vitamin complex as well as a good amount of caffeine.
Well that was fun! It's kind of nice to review something other than nail polish for a change (not to say I don't love a good polish review!). Overall I'm very happy with this VoxBox. I really didn't expect it to contain as many products that I use and enjoy.
great review
